With our annual injury crisis coming early this year, especially in the defense, it is not a surprise that we have been linked with the signing of various centre backs in the last few weeks. From all indication, the first choice centre back signing is Valencia star Shkodran Mustafi. According to Skysports, Arsenal have already agreed personal terms with Mustafi and are only waiting for a fee to be agreed with Valencia before the deal is announced.
Two weeks after Skysports reported we have agreed personal terms with the German, we are still yet to finalise the deal. And according to reports, the main reason why the deal hasn’t been completed is because Arsenal do not want to pay Valencia’s asking price which is said to be in the region of £50 million.
Arsenal are said to be ready to pay £25 million but many reports claim a deal could be done for £28 million plus some add ons. The real bone of contention seems to be on the £3 million differential. And it seems Arsenal are using the fact that Valencia needs to sell to balance the books and avoid UEFA FFP hammer to try to get a bargain.
But according to reports, it appears the deal is happening as Valencia have succeeded in their bid to bring in a replacement for Mustafi in Deportivo La Coruna’s Sidnei. According to Yahoo Sports reporter Andrew Gaffney, Sidnei is currently undergoing a medical with Valencia which means once he passes his medical Arsenal will be free to complete the signing of Mustafi.
Judging by the financial troubles surrounding Valencia, it is highly unlike that they have signing Sidnei and still keeping Mustafi at the same time. The Spanish club according to various reports have been actively looking to sell some of their players to raise funds to both balance the books and fund their own transfer purchases.
And knowing Arsenal and how secretive we can be when it comes to transfers, it will not be a surprise if Arsenal and Valencia have had a breakthrough in the negotiation in the last few days and the media haven’t been aware of such.
Either way, I personally would like to finally see the Mustafi deal done and Chambers sent on loan. Rob Holding in the two games he has played has shown he is better than Chambers and should be retained as a back up to our first choice centre backs.
