Arsenal have confirmed through their official website that striker Olivier Giroud will be missing the EFL Cup encounter against Southampton due to a groin injury.
With Alexis Sanchez firmly establishing himself as the number one striker for Arsenal this season, Olivier Giroud has clearly endured a frustrating time on the sidelines and it is clear to see that the Frenchman is intent on winning back his place in the starting place.
Giroud has been making positive impact whenever he has come off the bench and the striker was extremely impressive during his cameo against Bournemouth on Sunday, where he set up Alexis Sanchez with a fine assist.
The French international would surely have had his eyes set on earning a start during the upcoming EFL Cup semi final clash against Southampton on Wednesday night and the match could have been a perfect opportunity for the striker to stake a claim for regular starts.
However in a huge blow though, Arsenal have gone on to reveal that Giroud will be absent for the encounter after suffering a groin injury.
Giroud picked up the problem during the weekend encounter against Bournemouth and although the injury is not of a serious nature, the 30-year-old will not be able to line up against Southampton.
In place of Giroud, Spaniard Lucas Perez is now expected to be leading the line for Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium on Wednesday and the ill timed injury would surely have been a source of much frustration for the former Montpellier star.
